C420 Fullerene Model

George W. Hart

This is a large model of a C420 "fullerene" molecule built by the Stony Brook University Chemistry Club.

It is assembled from many plastic tubes and metal connectors.

I designed it as a fairly close approximation to a sphere
with the constraint that only two lengths of edge are used.

Groups of students made modules in parallel, being careful not to mix up long and short edges.

It hangs from five strings. The 50-inch diameter was too wide for the door,
so we carried it in two halves from the lab to the Chemistry Library.

Here's the whole happy crew.  As far as I know, the model is still hanging in the library.
