Clouds
Assembly Announcement

George W. Hart

Here's a new sculpture design I like, called “Clouds.” There are 60 parts (in four different shapes) that fill an ellipsoidal volume. I plan to make this on a large scale---five feet across---from laser-cut plywood. And I'll need some helpers to assemble it.

I've already made this small-scale model, which looks pretty cool! You can see the parts are held together with small cable ties. Cable ties are great for this because they're strong, easy to connect, and adapt to any dihedral angle between the planes. Based on this model, I'm confident a large-scale version will be beautiful and sturdy. In fact I plan to make two mirror-image versions at the 5-foot scale---a matched left and right-handed pair.

I've got the the full-size parts all laser-cut and ready to go. We just need to assemble them.

If you want to help me build the five-foot pair, the assembly will start at 1:00 July 23, 2015, at the Wang Center at Stony Brook University. Contact me if you want to attend.

I also made a video showing the structure.

You can read more about my laser-cut wood and cable-tie sculpture in my Bridges 2015 paper here.
