Limited Edition

Acrylic Sculptures

George W. Hart

I am offering for sale a small number of limited edition acrylic sculptures which I am constructing. Each sculpture will be produced in a total of six pieces.  Although this is a limited edition series, each piece will still be unique as they will be made in six different colors. Only one of each will be made in each color: blue, red, yellow, orange, green, and purple. The transparent acrylic is laser-cut extremely accurately so the sculpture fits together precisely and is visually rich with many layers of reflection, refraction, and overlaying.

Initially, the following four designs are available. I may introduce additional designs as these are sold out, but these will not be repeated.  Click the images for more information about each of these intricate sculptures.

Note: These are all sold and I currently have no plans for other limited edition pieces.

 On Uniqueness
I have many ideas for new works, so I do not generally repeat designs when instead I could spend the time creating entirely novel sculpture.  Part of what makes an artwork special to me and worth all the effort of making it is its uniqueness---it is the only one in the world of whatever it is. However, one-of-a-kind sculpture is inherently expensive because of the large amount of time required in the design and individual construction. In addition, many of my works require precise jigs which hold pieces in exact relative position for assembly. These jigs sometimes require more time to prepare than the actual sculpture parts. In a limited edition work, this design and preparation time is divided among several copies. So I am trying this new approach of limited edition forms in order to satisfy requests for more affordable sculptures. The fact that each is of a different color satisfies my need that each be a unique only-one-in-the-universe work. By limiting each form to only six pieces, I can still largely focus on new works.

For more on the mathematics of these sculptures, see this paper.
